Richard Moll: A Kind-Hearted Giant Passes Away
Richard Moll, a well-known character and voice actor famous for his role as the bailiff on NBC’s original “Night Court,” passed away at the age of 80. He peacefully departed on October 26 at his residence in Big Bear Lake, CA.
Born Charles Richard Moll on January 13, 1943, in Pasadena, California, he majored in history and psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, graduating in 1964. He began his career as a deputy probation officer in Alameda County and later worked as the “head of stock in ladies’ hosiery” at a San Francisco store.
Moll gained recognition for portraying Aristotle Nostradamus “Bull” Shannon, the bailiff on NBC’s “Night Court” from 1984 to 1992. His character, Bull Shannon, was a bald, kind-hearted, and occasionally naive individual, but his charm and ability to capture moments were unmatched.
In addition to his work on “Night Court,” Moll was a prolific voice actor. He voiced Two-Face in “Batman: The Animated Series” and “Batman: The Brave and the Bold” and took on multiple roles in video games. He also had acting credits in films like “Jingle All the Way” and “Scary Movie 2,” as well as TV shows such as “Smallville” and “Spider-Man: The Animated Series.”
Despite his success in comedy, Moll expressed a desire to diversify his roles. In a 1988 interview with the Tampa Bay Times, he revealed that although his comedy roles were gaining attention, he didn’t want to be pigeonholed into similar parts. He stated, “I want to get back to playing villains. I don’t want to be solely known as a comic actor. I enjoy portraying antagonists… it’s so much fun.”
The passing of Richard Moll represents a significant loss to the entertainment industry. His contributions to television and voice acting have left an enduring impact, and he will be warmly remembered by fans worldwide.
